This medication utilizes two active ingredients that attack the malaria parasite at different stages. Artesunate is a fast-acting artemisinin derivative that rapidly reduces the number of parasites in the blood within the first few hours. Amodiaquine is a longer-acting 4-aminoquinoline that eliminates the remaining parasites and provides residual protection due to its long half-life (which can exceed 30 days). The “Junior” pack is specifically dosed for the 7-13 age bracket to ensure efficacy while minimizing the risk of toxicity. The tablets are often vanilla-flavored to make them more palatable for children.

Clinical management requires a strict 3-day course. For children aged 7-13 years, the standard dosage is typically one yellow tablet (Artesunate) and one white tablet (Amodiaquine) taken together once daily for 3 days. Common side effects include dizziness, nausea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite. In rare cases, Amodiaquine can cause more serious side effects such as fatigue or a reduction in white blood cell counts. It is strictly contraindicated for children with a history of liver disease, blood disorders, or a known allergy to either component. If the child vomits within 30 minutes of taking a dose, the full dose should be repeated.
