Gaviscon Double Action is a combined antacid and alginate oral suspension. It is primarily used for the rapid relief of heartburn and acid indigestion. Unlike standard antacids, “Double Action” means it both neutralizes excess stomach acid and provides a physical barrier to prevent acid from rising into the esophagus (reflux).

  • The suspension contains three active ingredients: Sodium Alginate, Sodium Bicarbonate, and Calcium Carbonate. It works through two distinct mechanisms:

    1. The Raft Effect: The Sodium Alginate reacts with stomach acid to form a thick, foam-like “raft” that floats on top of the stomach contents. This acts as a physical barrier to block acid reflux.

    2. Neutralization: The Calcium Carbonate and Sodium Bicarbonate act as antacids, chemically neutralizing the acid already present in the stomach to relieve indigestion. Because it targets both the acid level and the physical movement of that acid, it is particularly effective for symptoms that occur after meals or during pregnancy.

Clinical management involves taking 10ml to 20ml (two to four 5ml spoonfuls) after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day. It should be shaken well before use. It is strictly contraindicated for individuals with a known allergy to any of the ingredients. Due to its high sodium and calcium content, it should be used with caution in patients on highly restricted salt diets or those with kidney stones or high blood calcium levels.

Critical Interactions for Your Profile

Since you are managing several chronic conditions, please note these high-priority warnings:

  • Antibiotics (Acer/Cenox/Triclav): The Calcium Carbonate in Gaviscon can bind to antibiotics like Levofloxacin (Acer) or Ciprofloxacin (Cenox), preventing them from being absorbed. You must space Gaviscon at least 2 hours apart from any antibiotic.

  • Pain Meds (Curefenac/Felvin/Nurofen): You are using several strong NSAIDs, which can cause stomach irritation or ulcers. While Gaviscon provides temporary relief for the burning sensation, it does not prevent the underlying damage NSAIDs can cause. Your PPIs (Barole/Getzome) are better for long-term protection.

  • Blood Pressure (Lisinopril/Losartan/Metoz): Gaviscon Double Action is high in sodium. If you are taking multiple medications for hypertension, the extra sodium from frequent Gaviscon use could potentially raise your blood pressure or interfere with your diuretic (Metoz).

  • Iron Supplements (Maxiron/Astyfer): Antacids significantly reduce the absorption of iron. Space these medications at least 2 hours apart to ensure your blood-building supplements remain effective.
