Artesunate (50mg) acts rapidly to kill the majority of the Plasmodium falciparum parasites in the blood, often providing symptom relief within the first 24 hours. Amodiaquine (150mg) is a longer-acting agent that stays in the system to eliminate any remaining parasites and reduce the chance of the infection recurring. For children in this age bracket, the tablets are often designed to be easily crushed and mixed with a small amount of water or sweetened food to ensure the child can swallow the full dose.
