Lotemp functions by inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandins in the Central Nervous System (CNS), which effectively raises the body’s overall pain threshold and acts on the hypothalamic heat-regulating center to reduce fever. Because it is a syrup, it is easily swallowed and absorbed relatively quickly compared to solid tablets. Most formulations of Lotemp are alcohol-free and designed with pleasant flavors to improve compliance in pediatric patients.

Clinical safety with Lotemp depends heavily on accurate dosing. To prevent accidental overdose, the dose must be calculated based on the child’s body weight. Overdosing on paracetamol can cause severe, irreversible liver damage. Common side effects are rare when used as directed, but allergic reactions (such as skin rashes) can occur.
