  • Astyfer is a specialized haematinic (blood-building) supplement that combines Iron with vital amino acids and B-vitamins. It is primarily used to treat or prevent iron-deficiency anemia, support recovery from illness or surgery, and boost energy levels in children and adults. Because it is a syrup, it is an ideal choice for patients who have difficulty swallowing tablets or those who require precise dosage adjustments.

Unlike standard iron supplements, Astyfer features a “chelated” iron source which is designed to be gentler on the stomach. The addition of amino acids (like L-Histidine and L-Lysine) aids in the more efficient transport and absorption of iron into the bloodstream. It also contains a comprehensive range of B-vitamins  and Folic Acid, which are essential for the production of healthy red blood cells and the maintenance of the nervous system. This multi-nutrient approach helps address fatigue, weakness, and poor concentration that often accompany low blood count.

Clinical management involves taking the syrup usually once or twice daily. To maximize iron absorption, it is best taken on an empty stomach; however, it can be taken with food if it causes stomach upset. It should not be taken with milk, coffee, or tea, as these can block iron absorption. Common side effects include dark-colored stools (which is harmless), constipation, or mild nausea. It is strictly contraindicated for individuals with iron overload disorders (like hemochromatosis) or those receiving repeated blood transfusions.

Clinical Warnings & Interactions

  • Antibiotics (Cenox/Triclav): Iron can interfere with the absorption of certain antibiotics. You should space Astyfer at least 2 hours apart from antibiotics like Ciprofloxacin (Cenox) or Amoxicillin (Triclav).

  • Antacids (Barole/Getzome): Medications that reduce stomach acid (like the PPIs on your list) can decrease the absorption of iron. It is best to take Astyfer at a different time of day than your acid-reducing medications.

  • Diabetes (Swibetic): B-vitamins in Astyfer are beneficial, especially since Metformin (in Swibetic) can deplete $B_{12}$ levels over time.
